
Committee of Human Rights Reporters – Ahmad Ronaghi Maleki who had been summoned to the East Azerbaijan Prosecutor's Office Wednesday January 16, 2012, was granted conditional release after being detained for several hours.
Ahmad Ronaghi Maleki is the father of Hossein Ronaghi Maleki who is a political prisoner on furlough and one of the Sarand Camp earthquake volunteers who was arrested at the campsite and sentenced to an additional prison term.
According to news obtained by CHRR from reliable sources, following his appearance per his summons at the East Azerbaijan Prosecutor's office at 8am January 16, Ahmad Ronaghi Maleki was charged with “insulting and defaming the judiciary of East Azerbaijan Province.” Initially his family was told to return the next day to follow up on his case, however Ahmad Ronaghi Maleki was released later in the day (January 16th) with a summons to come back on Saturday January 19th to undergo interrogations.
The group of earthquake relief volunteers was arrested in September at Sarand camp as they were administering aid to the earthquake victims. Tabriz judicial authorities today also accused the group that was sentenced to a total of 19 years in prison, of drinking homemade alcohol, use of illegal satellite equipment, and non-religious mix of the opposite sexes. Ahmad Ronaghi Maleki was told that his physical ailment would not prevent him from being arrested.
